One of the notable new movies premiering at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival is James Mottern’s filmmaking debut Trucker which stars Michelle Monaghan as Diane, a California truck driver going through a series of personal crises. Diane’s ex-husband Len (Benjamin Bratt) is dying of cancer, so he asks Diane to care for their son that she deserted at birth, but it takes some time for Diane to adjust to life with her now 11-year-old son Peter (Jimmy Bennett). At the same time, Diane is trying to come to terms with her feelings of her close friend, played by Nathan Fillion, whose marriage to another woman has kept them from taking their relationship further.

ComingSoon.net had a rare opportunity for an exclusive extended interview with Monaghan, and when the film’s production notes label Monaghan as “vivacious,” they aren’t kidding. Although this is a serious movie and role, Monaghan was a lively and fun interview, punctuating her responses with her delightful laugh and frequently calling the interviewer “dude” and “man” in a way that only she could ever pull off. We also had a chance to talk to the film’s writer/director James Mottern, an interview that you can read here.

ComingSoon.net: I’ve been a fan for a long time but unfortunately, all your movies have junketted in L.A. for some reason.
Michelle Monaghan: Yeah, they do unfortunately ’cause I’m in New York most of the time. (laughs)

Michelle Monaghan’s ‘Trucker’ role was a real shift!

To prep for her thick-skinned, tough-talking role in “Trucker,” Michelle Monaghan did the logical thing. She learned to drive a truck.

“It’s like a double clutch,” she says. “You have to downshift basically every time you shift. It was very tricky. I can drive an 18-wheeler but not a five-speed. I parallel-parked it and learned how to drop and hook and all those things.”

The hours behind the wheel transformed Monaghan into Diane, the title trucker in the film, which premieres Thursday at the Tribeca Film Festival. Diane coasts along, a hardened, promiscuous loner whose only friend is a married drinking buddy (played by Nathan Fillion).

She’s foul, she’s temperamental and the fact that she happens to look like, well, a movie star, seems to only speed her tour of the motels off the interstate.

The role is a far cry from Monaghan’s other upcoming work, the romantic comedy “Made of Honor,” in which she stars opposite Patrick Dempsey, or her turn in last year’s remake of “The Heartbreak Kid,” with Ben Stiller.

But when writer-director James Mottern spotted her in “North Country,” the gritty, Oscar-nominated 2005 film starring Charlize Theron, he knew he’d found his trucker.

“It was just such a brutally honest portrayal of a woman,” says Monaghan of Mottern’s script. “I immediately attached myself to it and we all worked really hard from that point to get it made.”

Michelle Monaghan suffered a nightmare wedding day – when she discovered her dress had shrunk. The Bourne Supremacy star married her boyfriend of five years, Pete White, in 2005, but admits the dress debacle threatened to ruin her big day.
She says, “I had a dress custom-made for me by a woman who has cats, and my husband is really allergic, so I had to get the dress dry-cleaned… I got it back two hours before we got on the plane, and it had shrunk in all the wrong places.”
And Monaghan, whose new film Made Of Honor is about a man who acts as his friend’s maid of honour, found that art imitated life for her nuptials.
She adds, “When it came time to choose (mine), the one friend who had always been a constant in my life was my friend Mike… He was a little surprised, but then he said yes and was really excited.”

Made of Honor hit’s theaters everywhere on May 02, 2008! Watch a preview below.
